Chicago is not only home to some of the best cuisines in the country but also a pretty impressive host of doctors. It’s my hometown, and I bounced between the Austin neighborhood on Chicago’s West Side, my favorite suburb Oak Park and the working class southwest suburb of Evergreen Park.

Dr. James Mitchell is an associate pediatrics professor at the University of Chicago. He graduated from Rush Medical College in 1983 and went on to complete his residency at the University of Chicago in 1986, according to the university.

Dr. Loris Rayner has more than 35 years of experience in pediatrics, Advocate Health Care reported. He graduated medical school from the University of Illinois in 1980 and completed residency at the Michael Reese Hospital Medical Center.

Dr. Lin Roberts has more than 30 years of experience in pediatrics, Advocate Health Care reported. She graduated from Rush Medical College with honors in 1981 and went on to complete her residency at the Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center.

Dr. Dana Thompson is an ear, nose and throat specialist who is one of only two black pediatricians to make Chicago Magazine’s list of more than 130 top children’s doctors.
She is the chief of pediatric otolaryngology at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and an otolaryngologist professor at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, according to both institutions.
Dr. Thompson completed medical school at the University of Missouri- Kansas City in 1991 and went on to finish her residency with the Mayo Clinic and hospitals in 1996. Ten years later, she received the American Laryngological, Rhinological and Otological Society’s Harris Mosher award for excellence in clinical research in 2006.

Dr. Wendell Wheeler, a Chicago native, turned a part-time pediatric emergency room position into a more than 30-year career in general pediatrics. He graduated from medical school at Northwestern University in 1982 and went on to complete his residency at the Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center, according to his LinkedIn bio. Dr. Wheeler served as medical director at Chicago Family Health Center for four years then took on the same role at Advocate Trinity Physician Partners for 10 years.
During that time, he expanded the South Park Pediatrics practice he opened in 1999 to include a second location in 2004. Dr. Wheeler is one of only two black pediatricians to make Chicago Magazine’s list of top children’s doctors.
