Who says reading can’t be fun? Well, technically I did in high school, but that’s because the only assigned reading failed to include characters I could relate to.
Reading was fun as a kid, and it is again as an adult. There were just a whole lot of in-between years I can’t account for. So think of this list as our ode to fun, and please keep the fun reads going through your kid’s teen years.
Please, Mr. Panda
By Steve Anthony
This is by far one of Journey’s favorites. It’s short, sweet and to the point. We love the simplicity of this book, from the mostly black and white pictures to the brief text. It does a great job of teaching children that the best way to get what they want is to use their manners.
Peanut Butter & Cupcake!
By Terry Border
This book was a Christmas gift from my husband years before we had kids. Since our beginning, we’ve always declared we were “stuck like PB and J”. This book makes a cute play on this perfect combo while introducing other worthy pairings.
The Day the Crayons Quit
By Drew Daywalt
I love a book that’s just as entertaining for adults as it is for kids, and this one fits the bill. In it, each crayon makes his case for why he’s so under appreciated or misused. You might find yourself empathizing with wax. You’ll definitely get at least a chuckle in.

No, David!
By David Shannon
Years ago, my mother, a former kindergarten teacher, introduced me to this book about a particularly inquisitive and rebellious child. My mom said her students would laugh out loud every single time they made it to a certain page. I won’t ruin the surprise, but do comment when you get to that page! You’ll know it.
The Rainbow Fish
By Marcus Pfister
This was one of my favorites as a kid. The story centers on a special fish with beautiful sparkling scales. Only, he refuses to share them, and as a result is very lonely. The takeaway is simple: Life’s more fun when you share what’s special about you with others.
I will admit that as a kid, I was just in it for the sparkly scales.
From Head to Toe
By Eric Carle
If Dr. Seuss owns classic children’s books, Eric Carle owns fun ones. I’ve never seen an Eric Carle story that wasn’t brilliantly illustrated. “Head to Toe” is no exception to the rule. The animals in it twist and bend making fun movements and asking readers to do the same. Get up and move while reading this one!
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
By Eric Carle
Teach your little one how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly with this delightful classic that’s as much fun as it is educational. Lessons about the days of the week and basic counting are weaved into the story. My 8-month-old son especially loves flipping the pages of this board book because it’s so bright and engaging.

The Very Lonely Firefly
By Eric Carle
This twinkling book is a little known story by a very popular author. We love this book because it allows children to use their imaginations by guessing what’s shining off in the distance.
The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales
By Jon Scieszka
This book is laugh-out-loud funny! If your child loves traditional fairy tales, the non-traditional spin this book puts on them will be an immediate hit.
Beep! Beep! Go to Sleep!
By Todd Tarpley
This is a Washington household favorite. I take advantage of each “beep, beep” to get as many giggles out of my little ones as possible. While the little boy in the book tries to wrangle his robots, you won’t have to worry about wrangling your kiddos because they will be captivated.
Harry Hungry!
By Steven Salerno
My kids love the dramatics of this book. I think it puts a neat spin on the old saying that kids will eat you out of house and home.
